What Are IP Enclosure Ratings?

IP stands for Ingress Protection. IP ratings are based on IEC 60529 and describe protection against solid objects (like dust) and water ingress. Common examples include IP54, IP65, IP66, and IP67 — broadly speaking, IP65 is dust-tight and protected from water jets, IP66 is dust-tight and protected from more powerful water jets, and IP67 is dust-tight and designed for temporary immersion in some contexts.

The two ratings buyers compare most often are IP65 and IP66 — both are dust-tight, but they differ in how much water-jet pressure they're built to withstand.

What Do UL Enclosure Standards Mean?

UL is a third-party safety organization and certification body. It evaluates products against applicable safety and performance standards — UL isn't simply another enclosure protection rating like NEMA or IP. It's closer to a safety certification, a product evaluation, and a confirmation of compliance with applicable standards.

You'll typically see this reflected as a UL Listed mark, a UL Recognized mark, or a reference to a specific UL standard that applies to enclosure systems.

When a product is described as UL Listed or UL Recognized, verify what the specific certification applies to and whether it matches your product use — the mark alone doesn't tell you the full scope of what was tested.

These three systems can be used together, but they answer different questions and should not be treated as the same thing.

Are NEMA and IP Ratings Equivalent?

No. NEMA and IP ratings are not exact equivalents — an IP rating alone does not establish a NEMA Type rating, even though the two systems can overlap in what they protect against.

The two systems can overlap in some protection characteristics, and a limited comparison can be useful for planning purposes. But NEMA Type requirements may include conditions that basic IP codes don't directly express — corrosion resistance, icing, oil or coolant exposure, and other enclosure performance factors.

An IP rating alone does not establish a NEMA Type rating.

Material affects corrosion resistance, weight, and durability, but it's a separate decision from the standard itself — a stainless steel enclosure isn't automatically NEMA 4X, and a plastic enclosure isn't automatically IP65.
